Waimea is the largest town on the northern side of the Big Island, resting between the Kohala mountains and Mauna Kea. The community straddles the boundary between the lush tropical Hamakua Coast and the sunny North Kohala coastal area. Different subdivisions rest in the ‘wet side’ or the ‘dry side’ of town depending on their proximity to either region. Waimea’s nearly 2700-foot elevation creates a mild climate, making it a cool reprieve from the tropical heat of the nearby Kohala Coast. Average temperatures range from the 50’s to 70’s Fahrenheit year-round, and average yearly rainfall is 37 inches.

Homes in Waimea are built into small subdivisions along the main street or set back from the town center. Mamalahoa Highway is the main route through Waimea, branching into Hawaii Route 250 towards Hawi, Highway 190 towards Kawaihae, and Highway 19 towards Kailua-Kona.

The rich ranching culture of Waimea dates to the 1800’s, and rustic elements reflecting the community’s heritage are incorporated in the buildings around town. Waimea is surrounded by ranch and farmland, the most well-known among these being Parker Ranch, one of the oldest in the United States.
