Another perfect ending to a beautiful day here on Kauai with my family as we watched the world class waves roll in at sunset from the St. Regis Princeville Hotel last night and enjoyed pupus and cocktails.

My daughter hung on her Dad’s every word as he told her about his day of big surf at Hanalei Bay. I personally don’t surf, but I certainly have an appreciation for the passion that possesses surfers to take up the call of the ocean and last night was no exception, the waves were so big that surfers were being towed in.

Living on Kauai provokes all types of inspiration, and for some, such as my ten-year-old daughter, that inspiration manifests itself in waking up very early before school to check the morning surf. This, as she so affectionately calls it, is the Dawn Patrol.

As the tender crescendo of the sun peaked the eastern horizon illuminating the thick mist coming off the crest of the waves, the simple beauty of it all got to me. There is nothing quite as amazing as when I stood on the pier while feeling and seeing the excitement and awe build within my child’s dark brown eyes as she watched the large pounding waves roll in. Dawn Patrol was certainly spectacular today. It makes me truly believe that it’s the simple things that really make you fall in love with Kauai.

George Clooney Visits Kauai and Films “The Descendants” Movie on North Shore

The Descendants, the new film from director Alexander Payne, received glowing reviews by critics after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, and Kauai locals are thrilled that one of the most charming people to ever visit Kauai, George Clooney, is seriously being considered for best actor come this award season at the beginning of next year. A lot of the filming was done on the north shore of Kauai and according to co-producer, George Parra, “every location is the real place.”

In the movie, George Clooney plays Matt King, a wealthy land baron living on Oahu, who is forced to reconnect with his family when his wife is involved in a terrible boating accident.

The Kauai filming of Descendants was done on the magical north shore using Hanalei Bay as a backdrop, where George Clooney’s character spends time at a family home set right upon the mystical Hanalei Bay.

One of the scenes in the movie takes place at the Tahiti Nui, an iconic hotspot here on the north shore. The restaurant patrons in the scenes filmed at the local eatery were local residents of Kauai. Clooney himself was very approachable and often posed for photos. Here is what some local residents had to say:

The move will be released in wide distribution on November 16, 2011.

Traditional voyaging canoes landed in Hanalei, Kauai; an epic trans-Pacific adventure! Ancient Polynesian culture literally landed in our backyard yesterday as 7 traditional double-hulled sailing canoes arrived upon our shores in Hanalei Bay.

These 7 canoes, complete with 16 crew members each, all hail from our various Polynesian neighbors. Chiefs and representatives arrived from Tahiti, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Samoa, and various other small island nations with one message: “We are all family in the vast ocean of the Pacific.”

This was the first time ever these island nations sailed in unison; an epic journey of thousands of miles aboard stout vessels modeled from Polynesian ancient voyaging canoes and is a very special event here in Hawaii. It has been 800 years since an event like this has happened upon our golden shores. Just like when the first Polynesian navigators landed here on Kauai thousands of years ago, these brave men and women from all over the Pacific were welcomed with open arms at a beautiful traditional ceremony on July 6th.

This voyaging legacy of master navigators and sailors brought their message of ocean awareness to their neighbors in the Islands of Aloha (Hawaii). Their heartfelt message was the Pacific Ocean is home to all of us who live here and we are all one ‘ohana (family). We must all become more aware of our waters and the effect humans have on the sea.

They departed from Kauai July 7 and the navigator’s next voyage will be to San Francisco and then to San Diego to continue to be ambassadors of aloha (love) and ocean awareness. They will then sail to the Galapagos Islands and then finally back home to their respected countries, completing a full circle.
