For years, I’ve had this fantasy of starting a luxury vacation ownership club in Hawaii. The owners would be able to choose from luxury homes all around the State. For one vacation, you might want to stay in the resort community of Hualalai on the Big Island of Hawaii. For another, maybe a beachfront estate on Kailua Bay on Oahu (like President Obama). I should confess that my fantasy has more to do with being a member of a club like that than actually starting the business (but I’ll have to start somewhere). Fortunately, my intrigue with luxury real estate is (partially) satisfied by the privilege of marketing some of the finest homes in the State of Hawaii.

Kailua Beach Estate, Oahu

When we started Hawaii Life, we were one of the few companies to aggregate all of the MLS listings in Hawaii. My (then) personal bias towards Kauai left me surprised to discover how often people who are shopping for real estate will consider multiple islands. That trend is even more expressed in high-end luxury real estate. I’m a member of every real estate board in Hawaii (except for Molokai). As a result, and because we have offices in all of these markets, I relate to the luxury market as a whole. When someone asks me, “What are the best homes in Hawaii?” I probably have one of the most unique perspectives in the State.

Anini Beach Estate, North Shore of Kauai

Hawaii can be a remarkably provincial place, and that provincialism is definitely expressed in its real estate industry. While it’s true that “real estate is local”, the buyers (and sellers) in the market for high-end luxury homes in Hawaii are often keenly aware not only of the different islands, but of their different markets and the distinctions between them.

Hualalai and Kukio, the resort communities on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, are markedly different from Anini Beach on Kauai’s north shore, for example. The resort environment offers innumerable amenities and options that other communities do not. Yet, there are buyers who consider both.

Hale Ku Mana at the Hualalai Resort

As we continue to develop Hawaii life’s presence in the luxury market, we’ll do for luxury what we did for the MLSs, by collecting the finest listings in the State and showing them in one place, without all of the noise and distraction of the rest of the market. Fortunately, I have the pleasure of working with some of the most experienced luxury agents in Hawaii to represent these homes. In the case of Hualalai listing above, Beverly Molfino R(S), and for the Kailua Beach Estate (among others), Neal Norman R(B).

As we continue to become the resource for luxury home listings in Hawaii, I get closer to my fantasy of having a luxury vacation ownership club… Or at least being a member.

We helped over 1000 people buy or sell property in Hawaii (at last count, we did 500 transactions this year, so I’m acknowledging us all for helping the other side of the transaction, too, as we do…).

We contributed to dozens of local and national causes, both publicly and anonymously. Schools, The American Heart Association, The Paia Youth and Cultural Center, The Hanalei Watershed Hui, The American Cancer Society, Habitat For Humanity, and more…

We welcomed some of Hawaii’s top-selling brokers and agents into the company all over the State, a huge acknowledgement to all of us, and a great opportunity to continue to show how marketing and representation of real estate in Hawaii should be done.

We have two Board Presidents, 3 Hawaii Association of Realtors Board Members, another Leadership Academy Graduate, a ton of local and state level volunteers, and several salespeople who passed their brokers’ exams this year.

We were nationally acknowledged by Inman News (again), as one of the most Innovative Brokerages in the company and for one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Real Estate.

Oh, we more than doubled our 2010 sales volume. Our 2011 sales totaled over $320 million. Wow.

Thank you. I know this year wasn’t easy. In fact, there’s a lot we’d love to forget about. In the face of that, and the innumerable stupidities that we deal with in this industry, you’ve made Hawaii Life shine. We’re humbled, honored, and grateful.

Mahalo Nui Loa, and here’s to 2012,

Matt

PS Just so we’re all clear about the title of this post. We are also grateful to our mascot, Mr. Nui, (without whom very little of this would be possible).

Interviewing Matt Beall, R(B) on Maui

At first, the idea of being on television was novel and exciting. But, when it became a reality, it was a little more intense than we expected. Personally, I’m not particularly shy. I don’t get stage fright, and I’m not usually concerned about speaking on camera. However, the responsibility of accurately representing Hawaii, our clients, the lifestyle and the culture is something we take very seriously. So, when the cameras started rolling, I think I speak for all of us when I say that we had a newfound focus on the words that we use and the interactions that we had.

At the end of the day, I think most people would be stoked to see a TV show that documents our business and how we do it. Unlike most reality shows, we probably don’t need to add any artificial drama (there’s plenty to go around in the real estate business).

What do you think? Would you watch “Hawaii Life: The Series”?

There have only been 4 residential sales in Kauai’s history for $20 million or more. All of the others included several hundred acres, whereas the Smiths’ sale of their property overlooking Secret Beach was only a 7-acre parcel. Considering that Roni represented both the buyer and seller in this transaction, I think it’s safe to say that she’s closed the largest residential transaction in Kauai’s history.

We are honored and inspired to have Roni at Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers. We’re looking forward to seeing her make headlines on a regular basis.

Earlier this week I was ‘installed’ as the 2012 President of the Kauai Board of Realtors. It was the first time in many years that the Kauai Board of Realtors has had an evening event, and open to guests. At Smith’s Tropical Paradise in Wailua, we had quite the party. Over 170 people were in attendance, with executives from the Hawaii Association of Realtors visiting from Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island, along with a few other Realtors from other islands.

I’m constantly asked why I volunteer at the Board of Realtors. Unfortunately there’s a perception that it leads to reduction in income, and that it takes so much time. Both perceptions are misguided, if not totally false. I could be guilty of drinking the indoctrination Kool-aide, but so far my short career of volunteering has brought only successful political action (which has greatly benefited our local community) and an increased ability to conduct business that I would have otherwise avoided or never had access to in the first place (especially in the case of short sales and REOs). Keeping track of current legislation by being on the front lines has helped my career immensely, both as a salesperson and a business-owner.

The entire process builds equity. It adds value to the organization, the political process and, ultimately, to the community. Yes, it takes time. Sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes it’s downright annoying. But if we’re going to have an organization that serves our community, educates itself (and the legislature) and stands for home ownership… then sometimes there’s going to be tension and disagreement. Sometimes tension and disagreement gets s**t done.

At Hawaii Life, the list of what we’re all grateful for is growing everyday.

We’re grateful for the 1000+ people we’ve helped to buy or sell their Hawaii property this year.

We’re grateful for our incredible team of 8 employees who have given A LOT of themselves. (And we’re grateful that we’ve been able to pay them).

We’re grateful to the 128 brokers and agents around Hawaii who have trusted us with their careers, and helped to co-create such an incredible company.

We’re grateful to live in a culture that knows how to relax, recreate, and not take ourselves SO seriously.

What are you grateful for?
