The Waikoloa Area: A Diamond in the Rough

Since the Big Island is relatively the youngest of the Hawaiian Island chain, it is still actively creating beaches. So finding a long, white, sandy beach along the seemingly endless stretches of ebony black lava is like finding a diamond in the rough.

Many people don’t realize what a variety of wonderful things the Waikoloa area has to offer. When driving North on Highway 19 from the Keahole Kona International Airport, make sure not to miss Waikoloa Beach Drive on your left. It is about 17 miles from the airport and definitely worth your time. Here and nearby you will find three of the top ten beaches on the island.

Popular Beaches

Hapuna Beach is one of the best rated beaches on the island thanks to its clean, long, white sandy beach and pristine blue waters. It is ideal for friends, family, and fun in the sun all year round.

Anaeho’omalu, or Waikoloa Beach, is also well known for its island style beauty. Teeming with colorful tropical life below the ocean surface as well as turtles basking in the warm sun along the beach, it is a must-see.

Heading North about ten more miles, you will find another amazing beach to spend the day and create vacation memories. The Mauna Kea Beach sprawls alongside one of the clearest stretches of water that you will ever find. It is like snorkeling in an aquarium and rarely gets crowded, so you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings almost as if it was your own private beach.
