Hidden Gems of the Hamakua Coast: Hardwood Forests, Tropical Jungles, Waterfalls & More

When most people first think of Hawaii, they think sandy beaches…I think hardwood forests, tropical jungles, and waterfalls. I guess that’s what happens when you grow up on the Hamakua Coast!

I especially love finding hidden waterfalls – so raw and untouched by civilization. First I will listen for the waters rushing, then I turn my drone on and get a bird’s eye view of the waterfall and how I may get there.

Hidden waterfalls are just one of the things that make the Hamakua Coast so special

Last weekend, I went on an exploratory hike on one of the properties I manage and found this waterfall with a drone…I had no idea it was there!

There’s a bit of excitement to be able to find a one-of-a-kind waterfall off the beaten path that’s overgrown with trees and tall grass. Just think, no one has been here in a very long time…no one probably even knows it exists!

That’s what is special about the Hamakua Coast compared to other places in Hawaii. Your own private waterfall may be hidden in your backyard, waiting to be found. Through the rugged terrains of nothing but overgrown shrubs and trees, there is still much to discover.
