2014 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Coming Soon to Oahu’s North Shore

It’s hard to believe it’s already this time of year! For those who are not familiar with fall/winter on the North Shore, our quaint Haleiwa town is suddenly filling up with happy sunburnt faces, almost every beach house is rented to surfers, or ocean loving people for the winter.

Coming down the Pineapple road into Haleiwa you can already see the lines of swells rolling in on the outer reefs. It is no surprise that from the grocery store, through the bikepath, and to the shoreline and water’s edge it is packed with locals, families, and spectators from all over the globe. This time of year is about coming together to experience Oahu’s North Shore, laid back, anything goes type of lifestyle – and of course the beaches, sunsets, and world-class waves aren’t so bad either.

Experience Oahu’s North Shore Surf Season

Living out on the North Shore, I am lucky enough to enjoy all that Haleiwa has to offer. Over the next few months, the North Shore is the home location to the series of contests called The Triple Crown of Surfing, which bring together the world’s best surfers to compete in conditions that test any surfer’s abilities. You can follow the entire series online, including watching the live webcast of the competition, for those who can’t make it down to watch in person.

If you would like, here is the link to watch the live webcast.

The Triple Crown consists of 3 events, with a waiting period from Nov. 12 – Dec. 20, 2014. The waiting period allows for the contests to be held in the best conditions, depending on weather and swells. In order to surf these events you need to qualify ahead of time, but there is one last chance…one last event, which is called the HIC Pro at Sunset Beach. If you’re here now, this is what the large tents and scaffoldings are for at Sunset Beach.

The HIC Pro runs Oct. 27th – Nov. 10th. It is featuring 112 surfers and offers a total prize purse of $85,000. Besides the prize and bragging rights, what’s neat about this event is that more than 50 percent of the athletes field is Hawaii surfers (58). The rest hail from Austrailia, USA Mainland, Japan, Tahiti, France, South America, and 4 wild card slots. This event is also important for Hawaii’s pro surfers to secure their slot in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and a chance to prove their abilities with some of Hawaii’s best waves as their stage.

I agree Chad, you are lucky to live Haleiwa, it is such a special place. I attended UH Manoa and my favorite thing to do on weekends, was to drive North to Haleiwa and watch the awesome surf, enjoy the white sandy beaches, and eat shave ice before heading back to the city. Thanks for this great blog, it brought back fun memories!
