3 Eclectic Home Decor Shops Worth Visiting in Honolulu

What’s your home decorating style? Contemporary? Mid-century modern? Eclectic and ethnic? Shabby chic? While some may bemoan Honolulu’s lack of interior design stores, the past five years have seen several outstanding stand-along boutiques open around the island.

Offering high-quality textiles, furniture, and accents selected by buyers with a keen eye for quality and aesthetic appeal, these stores carry goods that rival what you might find in Chicago or San Francisco! We’ve listed a few for your weekend shopping pleasure.

1. Chai Studio in Ward Warehouse

Open since 2010, Chai Studio features housewares and furniture exclusively imported from India, Turkey, and Morocco by owner/buyer Amerjit Ghag. Ghag describes her lifestyle store as “casual, colorful, and comfortable.” There is also an emphasis on sustainably sourced materials and “fair trade” items, which reflect her values.

Items you may find here include plush Turkish towels in organic cotton, Moroccan tea glasses, colorful silk sari textiles, a vintage chair with Indian upholstery, an assortment of bright accent pillows, exotic perfume oils, and Ikat dyed cotton bedspreads. The constantly refreshed selection never fails to disappoint, with price points that offer something for every budget

2. Kaypee Soh Honolulu (Formerly Somace) at Ward Warehouse

Recently moved to Ward Warehouse, this contemporary design store features textiles, furniture, and print art by talented Hawaii designer Kaypee Soh. Designs here are inspired by the natural environment and come from a deep respect for its beauty. You’ll find bold, colorful prints that reflect a tropical heritage, such as Monstera and plumeria, sea urchin, corals, and bamboo, as well as striking geometric designs that look very contemporary.

The Showroom at Kaypeesoh allows you to envision what you can do at your own pace and place.

It’s easy to mix and match color families and coordinate prints along Soh’s line of pillows, wool and hand-knotted rugs, decorative pillows, and tableware such as coasters, serving trays, and bowls. Don’t miss a chance to peruse Soh’s collection of stunning fine art nature photography printed on archival paper and gallery wrapped canvas.

3. Sugarcane in Kaimuki

Walking into this shop you may feel as if an Etsy store collided with a vintage shop! Sugarcane is an eclectic home décor and apparel boutique with an always-changing array of items. In one corner you’ll find hand-selected vintage clothing with an accent on cute and feminine, bright and fun. A niche in the wall holds the finest retro-china collection we’ve seen on the island; a set of delicate 60’s drinking glasses decorated with roses and gold leaves is an affordable $28; vases, whimsical tea sets, shabby-chic birdcages, and retro Pyrex bakeware complete your choices.

Sugarcane has all types of potential for designer use at bargain prices as well as boutique quality.
