Vintage Holualoa Home with Separate Cottage and Organic Garden

The Old Mamalahoa Highway meanders above Kailua-Kona through the Kona coffee belt, through a place known as Holualoa. I have to admit that the first time I visited Holualoa, I didn’t understand what the big deal was about this rustic old village. Having lived here now for well over 10 years, it’s easy to see why people long to live at this 1500+ foot elevation, peering down through the lush Kona coffee lands to the blue ocean below.

Vintage Holualoa Home

The Main House, built originally in 1941, features unique construction that is reminiscent of vintage Hawaiian architecture. This home features single wall construction, with belly band style, Douglas fir wood floors, and there is even a built-in punee bed in the living room. This period home is awash in all of the classic details you would expect to see, but restored to its original condition.

Separate Cottage and Other Property Features

The separate cottage has 2 bedrooms, enclosed lanai with eating area, large walk-in closet, and a bath and toilet room. The charming cottage is as the same period as the main house. There is also a separate prep kitchen that exits out to a grilling area. With almost a full acre of land, there is more than enough space for entertaining large family gatherings and Hawaiian style luau and events.

Organic Gardens and Bountiful Fruit Selection

The Organic Gardens have been using organic and bio-dynamic methods for 10 years. The soil, comprised of rich compost piles from the property, are the perfect medium for your Victory garden.

The bountiful variety of fruits on the property include:

  • lemons & limes
  • lychee
  • papaya & bananas
  • figs & cacao
  • coffee
  • mango & avocado
  • star fruit & pomegranate
  • and many, many more!

Holualoa Information

This property is the quintessential Old Hawaiian Home that the crooners of the 1930′s and 1940′s sang about in their wonderful tunes. It’s about a simple, uncomplicated lifestyle that is surrounded by nature in a cool and tropical setting – living off of the land, getting to know your neighbors, growing your own food, and living the good life.

Holualoa is the perfect place for anyone looking to change life gears, or for the artist or writer looking for inspiration, or for the retiree seeking to return to the nostalgia without having to give up the modern conveniences. Let me know if you would like to “talk story” about these wonderful vintage homes.
