Tastes of Hawaii Recipe – Hawaiian Sweet Bread From Kauai’s Old Plantation Days

Week 48 – Hawaiian Sweet Bread!

Hawaiian Sweet Bread Recipe

  • 2 Packages of Fleishmans Dry Yeast (this brand works best)
  • 1/4 Cup Luke Warm Water (temperature must be 100-110 degrees)
  • 7 Cups of Bread Flour
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 5 Eggs
  • 1 C. Warm Milk
  • 7 T. of Melted Butter
  • 1 & 1/4 C. Sugar (plus the 2 T. for proofing)

Directions

Yeast Mixture: First proof (combine and let set) the dry yeast, 2 T. sugar and warm water, stir, and let set.

Next, mix the flour and salt in one bowl, and in another bowl, beat 4 eggs. In a large mixing bowl, mix the milk and melted butter. Add the sugar and then the yeast mixture. Add the beaten eggs and mix until well blended. Now gradually add the flour 1 cup at a time, blending well each time until you have added 6 cups of flour. There will be one remaining cup of flour that will be added during kneeding.

Place dough on a flat surface and knead for 10 minutes, mixing in up to one cup of flour as the dough and surface become sticky. Then place the dough into greased bowl and cover. Let dough rise until it has doubled in bulk (approximately 3 hours).

When dough has doubled in size, preheat oven to 350. Push the dough down and kneed slightly. Divide the dough into four parts and shape each piece into a round shape (shape of Hawaiian Bread). Place in greased round baking dish (pie pan side).

Note: Can also be shaped into loaves or round shapes can be placed on greased cooking sheet. Allow to rise until double in size again.  After dough has doubled in size, beat remaining egg and SOFTLY brush the tops of each loaf with the beaten egg mixture. Bake for about 30-45 minutes until golden brown.

As mentioned in my first recipe blog, Hawaii is a wonderful mix of cultures and each of these peoples brought with them their customs and foods. The early plantation days saw these combining cultures creating foods that are unique only to Hawaii.

We thank these early pioneers who planted and nurtured these plantation fields and created many of these amazing recipes. Because we have this rich Hawaiian heritage, I started this running blog that features recipes with a Hawaiian flair.
