Forget 2012 New Year’s Resolutions, Reach For Inspiration

Instead of resolutions for 2012, let’s reach for inspiration. While I find people fascinating, and always can find something inspirational about everyone I know, there is one person that has always struck a cord with me personally and that was Steve Jobs. He has always understood the value of a team and he always sought to surround himself with talent.

Recently, I watched an interview he gave on 60 minutes; I was pleasantly surprised to hear that he was greatly influenced and inspired by the Beatles and Bob Dylan. Steve Jobs was quoted as saying, “My model for business is The Beatles: They were four guys that kept each other’s negative tendencies in check; they balanced each other. And the total was greater than the sum of the parts. Great things in business are never done by one person, they are done by a team of people.” Steve Jobs was inspired everyday by a song from either Bob Dylan or the Beatles!

Keep in mind that Steve Jobs kept at it, he never gave up, and was always an innovator when it came to building a team. I look forward to continuing to build and develop the teams comprising my personal and business life. As we roll into 2012, we continue to build our teams and find the sum of our parts in business and our personal lives. I challenge all of you to reach out and look for inspiration.

Therefore, my song for the beginning of 2012 is “I get by with a little help from my friends” by the Beatles:

“Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
And I’ll try not to sing out of key
Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends”

What song is going to inspire you in 2012 and why?

Great Blog Miriam! I agree that in business and in life, teamwork is important.
Your song is a good one… we do get by in life as supported by our relationships. It is that foundation that helps to keep us working on singing in harmony.

“What A Wonderful World” – Louis Armstrong ( http://goo.gl/EEDPZ ) As we’d glide in & out of port, the song playing in the background, the magic of life & traveling to far-away places just felt so wonderful. The song became a part of me, as the song still takes me to places far-away & close. As it reminds me of the joy of life here on Kauai, I feel inspiration & warmth in my heart every day.

Beautiful message Miriam. My favorite Beatle lyric is “and in the end the love we take is equal to the love we make”. I strive to be kind and fair and filled with compassion for all. Practice love. Teach love. Be an example of kindness, goodwill and compassion. It works miracles in all areas of life…even commerce…business should be a feel good experience for all involved. Here is to an exceptional 2012 filled with love and success for all!

Ahhh a classic! Played this one for my daughter and she wanted to know the band! U2 – she said “I love you too but what is the name if the band?”.

Great idea Miriam!
I have to go with “Lift me,” a duet by Ane Brun and a singer named Sivert Høyem from the band Madrugada.
I picked this one because it’s me and Elizabeth’s song. What ever success I have had in life is because she is my true inspiration… this year and all the years we have been together.
