Summer Fun on the Historic Wailua River, Kauai

Recently, my friends and I spent the weekend wake-boarding and tubing on the world famous Wailua River. It is located on the east side of Kauai. It is the only navigable river in Hawaii, is 2.0 miles long, and starts at the Wai’ale’ale Crater. Wailua in Hawaiian means “two waters into one” or “two branches running to the sea by one outlet.”

This Wailua section of Kaua’i is full of old stories because it was here that the Ali’i (high born) had most of their temples. They tell us that Kaua’i had about 124 temples, which is more than any other island. King Kaumuali’i, the last great King of Kaua’i, actually lived in Wailua. This area was sacred and only the high-born Ali’i were allowed to enter here. It is important, when visiting, to respect the ‘aina (land) at all times.

Getting ready for their tube ride; they have no idea what they are in store for!

There they go!

Having a blast despite just catching some major “air”

Spending the weekend on the river was magical. Wake-boarding, paddle boarding, tubing, and some barbecuing made this day truly feel like summer!

This has to be one of my favorite things to do living on Kauai. On your next trip to Kaua’i, be sure to stop by and explore the Wailua River.

Oh, and don’t forget, someone needs to clean the boat off after all the fun! We leave that to the guys!
