So, this morning I woke up to see snow in Hawaii…as the morning light revealed there was snow on Mauna Kea. This was not the first snow of the year, but it doesn’t seem to matter how long you live on the Big Island, it’s still exciting to wake up and see snow on the tops of the mountains. During the course of the day, it’s a topic of conversation, “Hey, did you see the snow on Mauna Kea this morning!” “Oh, yeah—did you see Mauna Loa? It’s really covered.”
If I have to wake up to snow, I’ll take mine 10,000 feet up on Mauna Kea, thank you!
Then there are those enterprising pick-up truck owners that climb up Mauna Kea and fill up with fresh snow. Like magic, the Big Island has snowmen and snowball fights all around the island after a good snowfall on Mauna Kea. A few snowfalls ago, I heard of a very photogenic snowman on the beach at Hapuna that was a big hit with the cameras of tourists AND locals.
Over my 20+ years in Alaska, I had plenty of mornings I’d wake up to snow. But, I have to say it was not nearly so much fun, nor so exciting. In fact, I’d have to say I was more along the lines of…grumpy!
Nope, when it come to snow..I’ll take Big Island snow over Alaskan snow…any day!

We have been in Volcano showing property now for 3 days. It’s the first time we have seen the snow from Mauna Kea on this side. It is breathtaking.

I’ve always wanted to see the snow from the Hilo side, from some of the pictres that I’ve seen it looks a little different than the pictures we usually see from over on this side.

What a beautiful site. Only in Hawaii do you get snow and surf. Sitting her jealous in Minnesota where it’s 5 degrees, looking at your beatiful pictures of Hawaii real estate.
