The former plantation town of Kilauea on Kauai’s North Shore has a well-known history in the sugar cane industry. Charles Titcomb, a sugar cane planter and coffee grower, purchased 3000 acres of land from King Kamehameha IV in the late 1800’s. After Titcomb died, his family sold the land to John Ross and E.P. Adams who then began a sugar plantation. In 1880, Robert Macfie Jr. purchased and incorporated the Kilauea Sugar Company. Soon thereafter, Princess Lili‘uokalani visited Kilauea to dedicate the first sugar cane train line constructed on Kauai. In 1910, C. Brewer and Company became the owners of the Kilauea Sugar Company. The plantation closed in 1971 after 90 years of operation.
